Connecting Essay 5

Internet Photograph

This photograph from online is a birds eye view of kiwis and pomegranate seeds sprawled out across the frame, above a light box, in an artistic pattern. The seeds are all grouped together whilst the slices of kiwi interrupt this pattern, the bright greens and reds contrasting effectively together. By the photographer using the light box, they have allowed for the intricate pattern of the kiwi's interior to stand out from the rest of the fruit, the thin oval strips of white starting from the center and stretching half way across the fruit, emerging from the core, complimenting the irregular pattern of black seeds also sprinkled around the core. The light box also allows for there to be a large amount of tone in the composition, bright parts of the fruits and dark parts making this a very detailed and eye catching piece of photography. The highly saturated fruit is something that would have been edited on Photoshop in order to exaggerate the fresh connotation of Summer, linking this season to Summer fruits.

My Photograph

I captured this photograph as part of shoot 5 in my exam. I wanted to photograph fresh fruits with meticulous and detailed patterns, along with bright colours that would be exaggerated through the use of a light box. I filled the composition with slices of kiwi in order to make it look as though the pattern of this fruit was endless beyond the frame. I'd captured a photograph with gaps between the kiwis, however the pattern was less effective this way. By grouping them altogether, there is a pattern in the interior's details and the repeated placement of kiwis around the composition. I like that the light box illuminates the fruits' colours and levels of brightness; something that I emphasised in Photoshop with the curves tool.

The Connection

There are many connections shared between the internet photograph and my photograph. The internet photograph is of great quality and a successful piece of advertising for ingredients to a fruit cocktail, and I believe my piece is of the same good standard. Both compositions are filled with elements of fruit, more so my image which suggests there being a more creative pattern with depth as the kiwi slices overlap one another. The small segments of white in the internet photograph however is an interesting touch, as this colour compliments the red and green and adds to the connotation of the word fresh, linking more to the summer season. A lightbox has been used in both photographs to illuminate the kiwi's patterns, but the colours have been exaggerated in Photoshop in the internet photograph which makes the fruits appear false, whereas the fruits in mine are bright, but of natural colours, instead of too overpowering for the audience. Both photographs have similarities to make them just as effective as the other, along with some differences to make them unique and individual instead of copies.
