Pattern photography is capturing the flow of a repeated design. This could either contribute to the full composition and fill the frame, or act as part of the subject. I could employ this type of pattern into my project through the use of shooting what I see whilst I'm out, capturing natural pattern instead of piecing together an image. I am not looking to just focus on capturing natural pattern because I want to be more adventurous and imaginative with my work. There are many ways I could introduce patterns into my photography, and I intend on exploring all types.
I want to look at pattern in fashion, such as particular jumpers/blouses/trousers etc. I intend on performing a shoot with my friends dressed up in stylish outfits, hopefully on location, capturing the patterns featured in their clothes. I could capture a variety of shots such as medium shots, long shots and close ups. This will provide me with a very versatile and captivating set of photographs. Not only do I want to look at fashion, but I also want to focus on patterns you can create through the movement surrealism. There are many ways to create a pattern in a photograph by manipulating a mixture of images together. I will look at photographing pictures where I can add in something to create a pattern, such as Polaroid pictures exploding from a camera, a multiple imagery of faces, sweets being poured out from a packet in a particular fashion. Surrealism is something that I am looking to develop further for this unit. I also want to focus on staging food, situation certain ingredients and dishes around the frame in a stylish manner. I have already found a couple of food staging photographers that I have included in my research log such as Marina Aurora and Carl Kleiner who will be my biggest inspiration for capturing this type of pattern. I would also like to perhaps explore face make up and face paints, where I could create intricate designs around someones eyes or mouth; not their whole face. I feel it could be interesting to attempt this style of pattern as it is something I have never explored before.
As a starting point, I am looking to begin with simply shooting natural pattern in order to set me up for this topic. I may find a particular element from this first shoot that I am interested in developing later on, however I am certain that I want to explore all four themes above that I have mentioned.
I have included a collage of photographs below that represent the topic pattern and inspire me.
Carl Kleiner
Carl Kleiner is a photographer who I have briefly looked at in my Research Log and intend on researching more deeply in my Photographer Research. He stages food and ingredients as part of his work, and explores the advertising and surreal theme in his work which are two topics I am wildly interested in. His composition and framing is always carried out so effortlessly, with his block coloured backgrounds and attention to detail.
Gordon Magnin
Gordon Magnin is another photographer that I have studied in my Research Log who I found that employed the topic pattern by manipulating the faces of those in portraits. If we could physically see the feelings people feel towards their appearance, I am guessing it would look similar to the way Magnin's conveys this in his portraits. The majority of the people in his work have their facial features jumbled up/cut up/mixed up etc, demonstrating their insecurities. This is how I see Magnin's work, and it is something I would enjoy exploring myself. The majority of Magnin's work is also in black and white, which is an effect I rarely use in my work as I am so much more interested by bold and captivating colours. Creating some black and white pieces displaying pattern would be interesting for me.
Magninn's work is the complete opposite to Kleiner's which is what I extremely admire. I am very passionate about versatility and being able to explore a broad mixture of different themes under just one topic. Patterns is the perfect topic for this, as it will allow me to experiment many techniques I've learnt over time and introduce them into this final unit.
After looking at how photographers in my Research Log have tackled this topic pattern, it has provided me with an endless amount of inspiration and ideas for me to start my project with. I am aware of the different themes I can explore throughout this topic, which is why I chose it over the other two topics that I was thinking about (water, and people and possessions).
